DURBAN

Durban is a cosmopolitan melting pot with luxurious beach-side hotels, temples, mosques, African craft stalls and Asian markets. Durban's primary attraction is its golden beaches. The prominade has restaurants, flea markets, swimming pools and an amusement park, which provides hours of entertainment. The beaches along the Golden Mile, Durbans beachfront, are crowded over weekends and during holidays. 6 kilometres of shark nets protect the shore. The Bay of Plenty on the Golden Mile is the venue for the Gunston 500 Surfing Event, which draws the worlds premier surfers. It also hosts the African leg of the World Beach Volleyball Championships. The world-famous Comrades Marathon is run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg in June. Other major events taking place in Durban are the Durban July Handicap Horserace, the Durban Point Easter Festival and the Indaba Travel Trade Expo.
