Hundreds of Southern Right Whales come to mate and calve here from July to November. Their arrival is announced by an official whale-crier who sounds his horn as he walks down the town's streets. Hermanus is also well known as a fishing resort and for its seafood. The Old Harbour has been preserved as a fishing museum. Beaches are safe for swimming. Day walks can be enjoyed along the foot paths in the nearby Fernkloof Nature Reserve. The local yacht club is situated at the Klein River Lagoon, which is popular for sailing and birding.
