| The Kalahari Gemsbok Reserve makes up one of the largest ecosystems in the world. Large game species, such as the antelope, are able to migrate without hinderance. The South African side is almost entirely bright-red-coloured sand dunes, and is home to the black-maned, cheeky Kalahari lions, as well as leopards, cheetahs, jackals, eland and wildebeest. Birds include ostrich, over 40 kinds of eagles and raptors and many other species. It is not a pure desert, as it does have occasional rain when brief patches of grass, trees and flowers occur. The best time to visit is in Autumn and Spring. Day temperatures reach above 40 degrees celsius. Night temperatures often fall below zero. This is a malaria area. |
