| Robben Island, off the coast of Cape Town, is the infamous site wher Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for over two decades. It was first used as a refreshment station by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). It was later used as an asylum and leper colony until it came under the juristiction of the Army and Navy and eventually the Department of Corrective Services. The island has been declared a protescted area as the fauna and flora are outstanding. The island is reached by ferries leaving from the V&A Waterfront. Bookings are essential during peak periods. |
