SHAMWARI GAME RESERVE

The aim of the Shamwari project is to protect an area endangered by the encroachment of civilisation, and to foster interest in the conservation of all forms of animal, flora and avian life, as well as the history of this region. Shamwari lies between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown, and forms a natural extension of the famous Garden Route, connecting with Cape Town. This contrasting topography from mountain ravines, open plains, grasslands, valleys and riverine thicket, is one of the outstanding features of Shamwari. There are guided walks with armed rangers and day or night game drives. Big game encounters bring you close to BLack and White Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Giraffe and Hippo. The open plains provide the opportunity to view Zebra, Black and Blue Wildebeest, Common and Black Springbok, Blesbok and Red Hartebeest. Gemsbok, Eland, Kudu, Bushbuck, Aardvark, Leopard, Aardwolf, Caracal, Genet and Cape Grysbok are included in the many species to be viewed at Shamwari. Well over 200 varieties of raptors and birds, from the majestic Marshall Eagle, to the greater Double-Collared Sunbird, have been recordered. Shamwari Game Reserve is the ultimate wildlife experience.
