VOORTREKKER MONUMENT

This monument was built in 1949 to commemorate the Voortrekers pioneering spirit. This monolithic monument is a major landmark and is situated on a low hill, just outside Pretoria. Some regard it as an important memorial for Afrikanerdom, others see it as a reminder of Apartheid. Its interior frieze is said to be the second longest in the world. The monument has some of the finest sculpture work in South Africa.
