South Africa

This is by far the most popular way of exploring South and Southern Africa. Roads are generally good and well sign-posted, with major tourist attractions carefully highlighted. Be prepared to drive on the left-hand side of the road, at speeds of 60 km per hour in towns and cities and 100 km to 120 km per hour on national highways. Budget for petrol costs of approx. R4.00 per litre, with most petrol stations staying open 24 hours a day. NB - note that in terms of South African law, petrol cannot be purchased by credit card - you will need to pay cash in Rands.

Rates quoted above are per day and are fully inclusive of :- daily rental charges unlimited kilometres collision damage insurance (subject to applicable excess) theft loss insurance (subject to applicable excess) VAT currently at 14 % local surcharges road maps Extra per-day insurance (Xtra Ins above) can be purchased to reduce the collision damage and theft excess to the Lower Excess indicated, subject to the Exceptions Liability excess, which may be applicable even if the extra per-day insurance is purchased. Factors that could invoke the Exceptions Liability include :- COLLISION DAMAGE EXCEPTIONS LIABILITY Damage due to negligence of the driver No other vehicle was involved in the collision unless exceptional circumstances apply Unauthorised driver Failure to extend the rental contract Failure to report a collision to the car rental company and to the Police within 24 hours Driving into the back of a moving vehicle THEFT EXCEPTIONS LIABILITY Failure to produce the car keys unless they were taken by force Failure to report the exact details of the last known location of the vehicle prior to theft Parking in unsafe areas Failure to report the theft to the car rental company and the Police within 6 hours of discovering the theft The additional insurance option must be specified and prepaid prior to collection of the vehicle, as this option costs substantially more if purchased on pickup of the vehicle. Cars are available from many locations throughout South Africa including all airports, and are valid for travel in South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho by prior arrangement. All one-way rentals are subject to a one-way drop-off fee, and cross-border rentals including Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe are available by prior arrangement.
